You can’t read about custom wheels and rims without coming across clear wheels.  They’re made from polycarbonate and are completely clear, no spokes, nothing.  So you can clearly see the fancy brakes that are normally hidden from view.

Do they do the job? Well yes, if you believe the burnout videos on YouTube.

The price is about $5000 a wheel … Now in my house, just getting someone to wash and vacuum the car is a big deal.  Imagine having to keep clear wheels clean?  I mean, there’s not much point having them if you can’t see through them, is there? 

The manufacturer http://forgiato.com/ has some background in jewelry and so it’s no surprise that the wheels have a bezel mounting - the same way diamonds are mounted in ring settings.  Aah! so it’s not just a wheel, it’s all about showing off your bling.

Well the reality is thieves specifically target custom wheels and rims, especially expensive ones on a regular basis.

Police say that crews steal tires and rims off specific makes of cars on an “steal to order” basis. They’ll do this in a particular area for a while, then they usually move on to another jurisdiction.

You can stop the thieves in their trackes with simple, inexpensive wheel locks, such as the ones made by Gorilla.

Gorilla claim their locks are the most advanced and unique locks on the market and their external security pattern makes the Lock virtually impossible to remove without the matching key.

Its absolutely worth spending $20 or so on a pack of these to secure your custom wheels, which are probably worth at least 100 times that.

Hot Spinners

The original spinner was brought to market by Davin Wheels (davinwheels.com). This product was one of the first to be patented and has achieved a loyal following. As a result Davin is still producing the product today, changing the designs regularly to keep it fresh.

The Davin StreetSpin SS4 and SS5 are available in sizes 22×8.5/10 and 24×9.5, plus the SS5 is also built in a 26×10. The SS4 and SS5 each use a black mesh grill that provides a nice contrast to the chrome spinner.

MHT (www.mhtwheels.com) produces durable and well engineered products, like the Floater under the DUB label. Notably the Floater rides on a bearing and uses a patented locking system that eliminates the chance of it separating from the wheel. One of their hottest new styles is the Zveet, which is available in sizes 24×10, 26×10 and 30×10.

Cold Spinners

WheelPros will no longer be producing its SpinTek product. Another brand, StopNGo from Player Wheel Group, has also been discontinued.

Car enthusiasts are behind the drive towards larger rims and lower profile tires.

For a while, the twenty-inch custom wheel served as the gold-standard size in custom wheels.. As a result car manufacturers followed suit by offering standard wheels in sizes 18, 19 and 20 inches  (The Chrysler 300C being one of the best examples of the genre).

So once more the custom wheel after-market has raised the bar and in 2006 a new milestone was reached when the first ever 30-inch production wheels were produced.

These were sold to MTV’s “Viva la Bam” star and professional skateboarder, Bam Margera (who probably drove the car straight into his pool to celebrate!).

Meanwhile, Mizati leads the way in the size wars with many wheels in 22 and 24-inch sizes and now some great new 26-inch wheels.
